Children's Hospital Looking for Former Patients
Were you ever a patient at Children's Orthopedic Hospital on Queen Anne? Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center, in Seattle, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and is looking for former patients who spent time at the original Children's Orthopedic Hospital on Queen Anne Hill at First Ave. N. and Crockett St.  The hospital was located there from its opening in 1907 until it closed in 1953 when it moved to its current location on Sand Point Way NE. As part of their centennial activities a book is in preparation recording their history, both on Queen Anne and in their present Laurelhurst locations. If you were a patient during those earlier years, they would love to talk to you and get your recollections of life at the hospital. Please contact our QA Alumni historian, John Hennes, and he can put you in touch with the right people for you to tell your story to for posterity. John can be reached at 206-282-2266 or johnh@qahistory.org.
The Class of '56
History Repeats

The Queen High School Class of '56 returned to the scene of their Senior Prom on June 17th for the 50th class reunion/. 145 former students plus spouses, friends, and significant's gathered for an evening of renewing old friendships, frequent photos shoots and a really fine buffet dinner. Setting the tone of reminiscence were several vintage automobiles lining the entry drive to the clubhouse.

The main ballroom was decorated with banners and the tables were accented with ribbons and flowers in school colors and confections of the period. One end of the room was lined with nostalgic mementos of High Schools activities; at the other, picture groupings from various Grade Schools which contributed which contributed students to Queen Anne were on display.

This event, held at Nile Country Club, culminated a year of planning and sleuthing; often rewarding-sometimes disappointing. All in all it was a lot of work but well worth the effort - bringing together in the organization phase and finally to the event itself.

The principal architect and ramrod who kept things moving on track was Perry Perry. Others contributing time and /or money towards the event were Ron Beloit, Mike Copass, Paula Price Cuneo, John Cuneo, Sue Davis, Barbara Quiett Dierickx, Judy Flanagan, Jackie Hanor Ford, Remo Galvangno, Nancy Olsen Gradwohl, Dave Hendrickson, Goerge & Wanda Hutton, Robert Jensen, Donna Cox Kallicott, Bill Marshall. Nancy Rauh Mertel, Charles Mertel, Art Mitchell, Joy Brown Monroe, Woody O'Rourke, Ardena Bramwell Pendleton, Carol Dent Poppe, Gary Rettig, Elizabeth Schenken Roach, Ken Rose, Anne Hamilton Stern, Suzanne Arnold Suther, Barbara Woods Thompson, Carl & Stephanie Weiss, and Joe Walker.

Thanks to the contributors; you made this happen. thanks to the many participants; it's ypou who make it a party.

The Class of 1960 Reunion

Marilyn Markoff Southern '60 sent in this item
Can it really have been 45 years since we graduated from QAHS? Seems like just yesterday when walked down to the Memorial Stadium singing, “We are the Grizzlies, the mighty, mighty Grizzlies, etc.” and then watched our team in orange uniforms play in the mud. Remember when the girls were commanded by the boys to go into the smoky, smelly Greasy Spoon on Sadie Hawkins Day. Or the times some of boys had to spend on CCC (Campbell’s Cleanup Crew). Or when we read “John Brown’s Body” in Miss Hick’s Language Arts Class. Or when we learned Geometry and that” It’s a women’s’ prerogative to change her mind” from Mrs. Paul. Or how Mr. Clark taught us how to use a slide rule. Or when we preformed in Kuay Kapers and “Brigadoon”. Or when we went to the PTA dances at the Feildhouse. Or when we graduated at the Ice Arena and Prom night at the Olympic Hotel’s Spanish Ballroom.

These are just some of the topics of conversation overheard on Saturday, October 1st at the reunion of the Class of 1960. The reunion was held at the Shilshole Bay Beach Club. The food was wonderful, the view spectacular and the company of classmates It was fun, fun. fun for the 110 persons who attended. For several of them it was their very first reunion. We reminisced about high school days, caught up on times present and talked about tentative plans for the future big 5-0 reunion. Everyone had a grand time. We really should do this more often.

Two Classmates Hold A Small Reunion

Susan (Levy) Eberhart came down to Orange County, California to spend a weekend with me and attend a Mariner's/Angel's game. Stewart Title has clubhouse seats which we used for the game. Susy was not shy about rooting for the Mariner's; since I'm a Yankee's fan, I did't care who won and the Mariner's actually took all four games in the series.

It was an enjoyable weekend for two friends who hadn't seen each other since the 20-year class reunion. That didn't seem to matter; it was like 40+ years had never happened, we just took up where we had left off. I encourage all of you to look up an old friend; the rewards are limitless.

Introducing The "Grizzled Riders" Motorcycle Riding Club

John Daniels '56 sent in this item
Hello fellow Queen Anne Grads. I am John Daniels from the class of '56. It is my intention to form a group of Grads of the 50's into a informal Motorcycle Riding club. The purpose of the club would be to get together for day rides mostly North of Seattle. Rides would start and end at restaurants or pubs, with possible snack breaks in the middle. We would ride from @100miles to @200miles at a time. Meetings would be restricted to planning sessions when needed. Obviously there would be no dues or other fees.

I have been riding Motorcycles off and on since the early 60's ranging from full dress Harley's to 250cc dirt bikes and various sizes in between. Presently I am riding a 750 Honda ACE with my wife of 46 years usually on the back. We just returned from a 3 month Motor home trip to the Southwest with the MC in a trailer and put about 3,000 miles on the bike in day trips down there. (Don't get me started on the great riding available there.) If any of this sounds interesting please send me your thoughts.

Thanks, John Daniels (56)

Over 115 Attend QA Christmas Luncheon

The annual Men of Queen Anne Luncheon held on December 28th was a huge success with over 115 in attendance. They came to share fellowship and tell grizzly stories. The highlight was the presentation by Ralph Vanni'54 to his uncle, Edo Vanni'37 of the Spirit Award named is his honor. Edo is fondly known as "Mr. Baseball" in Seattle and he told of his love for the game, how he got started, and the baseball collection of memorabilia which includes autographs from legends of the game like Ted Williams. Edo also owns a signature Babe Ruth bat.

Stan Isenhath'67 spoke about the Bob Houbregs Queen Anne Golf Classic that will be held again at Inglewood Golf Course sometime in September. By the way, the torunament is open to all ladies golfers too.

A special guest was Add Sewell, Young Life leader at Queen Anne from 1948- 62 who on his next birthday will turn 90.

The buzz is already building about next year and an early invitation has been given out to Men of the 70's to come and join in the Christmas social. This was the 31st year for the luncheon which started when several graduates of the Class of 1954 got together after the funeral of their friend, George Varver'54. Over thirty-five classes are now coming and connecting with old friends. It's good to know that this Queen Anne tradition is here to stay.

Dedicated Alaskan Rafferty, '76, releases first CD

QA grad Julie Rafferty '76, for 20 years a resident of Alaska, has released her first CD, called, in tribute to her adopted state, "No Finer Place."
In high school, Julie sang with the Cantorians as well as the Seattle All-City Choir. She remembers QAHS choir teachers "Brownie" - Eugene Brown - and later Roger Haapanen, who introduced the choir to jazz with Dave Brubeck's "Take Five," an abrupt change from the usual choral fare she had been offered. But it wasn't until almost two decades later that she found her love of jazz finally blossoming, as evidenced by the recordings on her CD.

After high school Julie ventured north to Alaska, working summers in Glacier Bay National Monument and Denali National Park. Eventually, she permanently settled in Fairbanks where she graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, married, and had two children.

As a singer/actress in Fairbanks, she performed for many years at the PalaceTheatre and Malemute Saloon in their raucous, humorous tourist shows. She's also been in various musical theater productions, most recently in "My Way," a tribute to Frank Sinatra. Her credits also include various musical incarnations, including a folk trio, a children's troupe called Trina and the Triceratops, and as a featured vocalist with combos and other groups, including the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra.

Unlike the broad humor and madcap singing skits of the Palace and Malemute Saloon shows, Julie's debut CD is done in an easy jazz style. There's no Gold Rush slapstick here, but classic "lower '48" tunes such as Haven't We Met?, I Just Found Out about Love, Let's Get Away from It All," and The Nearness of You.

Despite the -30 degree winter temperatures, Julie says there's "no finer place" than Fairbanks, Alaska. Grizzlies "suffering" the current frrrreezing temperatures around Puget Sound may wonder how Julie can keep singing at temperatures over 50 degrees colder. You can ask her at raffertyjulie@hotmail.com. Tracks from the CD can be heard attcdbaby.com.
