Board
sets price for excess yearbooks at $25
|
|
Following
is a report from QAHSAA archivist John Hennes, '51. Basically the
Board is moving toward making yearbooks available for sale for certain
years, but is not ready to do so yet. Meanwhile, more books are
sought for many years.
|
|
"Last
month the [Queen Anne High School Alumni Association] Board decided
several issues with our extra books: 1) Provide a set to the Seattle
Genealogical Society (as many as we have); 2) Fill requests from
alums who want their years; 3) Make additional extras available
to classes to sell at their reunions; and 4) Charge $25 per book,
plus shipping... Note that we already have a master archive set,
a working set ... and have given books to the Seattle Public Library.
An archive set also exists at the School District Archives."
According
to John's yearbooks spreadsheet, the Association possesses only
one book each for the classes of '77 and '81. There are 15 classes
for which there are only two yearbooks: '10, '11, '14, '15, '16,
'50, '57, '58, '59, '66, '69, '73, '75, '76 and '80. Six classes
are represented by three books: '12, '13, '20, '53, '67, and '70.
The rest have at least four with '68 the most yearbook-affluent
with 18. Next highest are eight classes with eight books each. We
will soon provide further information as to how many sets the Association
must have in order to have excess for sale and which classes have
achieved that number.

reunion planners set second meeting Oct. 9
|
|
The
group - small so far, but hoping others will join them - who have
started to plan the Class of 1973's 30th reunion, met on Sept. 17
and plan to meet again on Oct. 9 at A Perfect Celebration, Gayle
Sprague O'Donnell's store in Bellevue at 900 108th Avenue NE, Suite
104. Mulling over ideas at the first meeting were Bev Lange Kushell,
Rod Randle and Gayle, with Sam Brace checking in by phone. Gayle
is checking out some locations so that they can talk about setting
a date.
Others
are encouraged to show up for the second meeting at 900 108th Ave.
NE, Ste. 104 on Oct. 9. The last meeting took place at 7 pm, so
presumably that will be the hour of the next meeting. We will correct
this guesswork soon, if necessary. You can contact Gayle by e-mail
at Gayle@aperfectcelebration.com.

We

was going to be contacting some others, but I haven't got any names

reunioneers plan September reprise
|
|
The
Class of '52 had such a great reunion in July that they plan to
do it again in September. According to Reunion Committee Chairperson
Alice Ogden Brown, "The 4-day reunion of the class of '52 was
the visiting, catch up, reminisce event of the year. We sang, danced,
talked, laughed, golfed, walked, ate and renewed old friendships.
210 people attended the dinner and nearly that many made it to the
picnic. We did HAIL TO ALMA MATER in the best tradition of Grizzlies.
It is a class where all the men are handsome, all the women are
good looking and all our children are above average."
Here's
the plan for September 8:
"If
you missed the main event or want to visit some more, there will
be a class of '52 reunion wrap up pot luck picnic for classmates
and committee, hosted by Tim and Auverne Dieffenbach, Sept 8 at
noon. For more information and directions e-mail before August 25
to auverne@northwest.net
or sunnyalice@earthlink.net.
RSVP."

grad wants to get going on next year's 30th reunion
|
| Gayle
Sprague O'Donnell, a member of '73's 20th reunion committee, wants
to get a committee functioning ASAP in planning for the 30th. She
would like former committee members or anyone interested in being
on the committee to contact her at gayle@aperfectcelebration.com.
The Alumni Association acknowledges that an early start is important
because there's a lot of work to be done in finding "lost"
classmates and updating street addresses in the database. |

(Focus is having extended hours for Saturday gathering to allow
more social time since 20th seemed liked it blew by us.)
Cindy
Foy had mentioned to me that night she just couldn't do another
reunion, so let's give her a chance to enjoy one getting to sit
back and
relax!

Obituary:
Carol Ann Rowe Choate '76
|
June
7, 1958 - April 22, 2002: Carol, a long-time resident of Queen
Anne,
passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends following
a
courageous battle with cancer. Carol's wonderful sense of humor and
innate
ability to have fun will never be forgotten. The simple pleasures
in life
for her were a good book, soaking up the sun's rays, Hood Canal with
Ron's
parents, road trips and the ocean. All who knew her admired her honesty
and
great wit in the "whatever" of life. She has now found the
meaning of the
"Happy ever after here in Camelot". Carol is survived by
her loving husband,
Ron; parents, Clifford and Irene Rowe of Queen Anne; her seven siblings,
Martin and wife, Linda, Charlotte Gordon and husband, Steve, Mary
and
partner, Jan, Bill, Bob and wife, Teresa, P.J. and partner, Lynn,
and Susie.
She is also survived by Ron's parents, Hanford and Anneliese Choate
of
Brinnon, WA; Ron's brothers, Michael, David and wife, Maria, and Bryan
and
wife, Leslie. Carol will be greatly missed by numerous nieces, nephews,
extended family, friends and her faithful dog, Duke. A very special
appreciation to all her friends and co-workers at Washington Dental
Service.
The entire family expresses heartfelt gratitude for your love and
support.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Providence Home Care
and
Hospice of Seattle, 425 Pontius Ave. N., Suite 300, Seattle, WA 98109.
Recitation of the Rosary will be Monday, April 29th, at 7 p.m. at

will be
celebrated Tuesday, April 30th, at 4 p.m. at St. Anne Catholic Church,

Rinks,
Cold-Stone Rinks, and Soshes
|
|
4-19-02:
Allan Keith '62 registered for our e-mail directory recently and
added the following reference to social groups at Queen Anne. "While
I was more of a rink than a sosh, I was not a cold stone rink at
that. I did graduate from Queen Anne. I've always been proud of
that. I spent memorable years there. After 30 years in the Navy,
I'm kicking back and taking it easy...If anyone knows the whereabouts
of Donn Harr or "Lewie" Peterson, aka John Lewis Peterson,
pass my e-mail address along. GO, GRIZZLIES!!!!!"
Rinks
and the Grizzly Inn are currently being referred to on one of the
QA message boards on Classmates.com. We wonder when the term started
and what it means. It doesn't seem a logical term for guys who hang
out smoking at the Grizzly Inn while keeping an eye out for Campbell.
Allan's
address is kallan410@msn.com.

Grizzly
clothing provides unforseen benefits
|
|
A Queen
Anne grad, apparently one of our better merchandise customers, was
recently pulled over by one who has the power to do. The obedient
and nonplussed alumna behind the wheel was glad to learn that her
"infraction" consisted of her vehicle's sporting a Queen
Anne Alumni license plate holder. The officer attracted by the license
plate holder also found that the driver was wearing a Queen Anne
t-shirt and a Queen Anne cap. Smitten with alumni nostalgia, the
gentleman, identifying himself as a fellow Queen Anne graduate,
awarded our proud Grizzly driver a get-out-of-jail-free card good
for her next 12 automotive missteps. In return, she told him about
our Grizzly Web site. There may be a moral here somewhere. One thing
is certain: buying QAHSAA merchandise helps provide scholarships
to Queen Anne descendants. And actually wearing the stuff might
get you pulled over.
(We
have yet to learn the identity of the driver. We do know who the
officer is, but we're not telling.)

Rumors
of basketball and classic cars
|
|
4-10-02:
We've heard, via Drew Miller '48, that there's a bunch of former
Grizzly basketball players that currently engage in some sort of
repeated acts of bonhomie. Perhaps they still play basketball, since,
according to Drew, who's a Camp Orkila alumnus, these guys tend
to be younger. D Hawkes is a name assiciated witht the basketball
group. Perhaps that's Dwight Hawkes, '54.
In
its formative stage is an effort to include in this summer's Magnolia
Days Parade a flock of Grizzly-driven classic cars. There are currently
more than a half-dozen QA alums who are gunning their engines in
anticipation. Gordon Fouts '58 is trying to put it together. We'll
post updates when and if there's further news.

Obituary:
Anthony Thor Gary '73
|
|
Recently
we received from Lora Torgesen Condon '72 notice of the death of
Thor Gary '73, whose last name became Gianesini sometime after high
school. Thor drowned on August 19, 1999, while vacationing with
his family on the Campbell River in British Columbia. In Lora's
words, "Thor was a police officer in Tumwater, WA. His memorial
service was attended by over 1,000 friends and fellow officers.
He is survived by his wife and two sons. Thor will be remembered
as one of the last of the 'good men.' He was always true to himself;
he always did the right thing; he was the most honest of men; he
was the best friend a person could have; an incredible husband;
a loving and devoted father. A bright light went out on Aug. 19,
1999, one that will never be replaced."
Lora
moved to California during her senior year but says she still considers
Queen Anne her alma mater.

A
1945 site by Phil Davis
Nearly
40 photos from the Class of 1945's 55th reunion - attended also
by '44 and '46 alumni - are featured in Phil Davis' MSN Communities
Web site. There's a message board and other useful elements
to the site. Reach it at http://communities.msn.com/QueenAnneHSClassof4555thReunionParty.
It seems the capital letters are not absolutely necessary, but
be sure to get everything else exactly right.

Neal
Vonada of the Class of 1945 has established a Queen Anne website
in the Groups section of Yahoo.com. You'll have to jump through
some (free) Yahoo hoops to work out an ID and password, etc. in
order to look at the site. You can participate in the site with
messages and photos. The address is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/qayearsbook.
Note that it's "yearsbook," not "yearbook."

QAHSAA events proposed |
Why
do QAHSAA men have all the fun?
Here's
an e-mail we received from Linda (Daniel) White '63 suggesting that
the alumni ladies at least get their own luncheons going. Her e-mail
address is in the following message.
"It
seems that the men have all the fun! While reading my latest newsletter,
it struck me that the men had luncheons and golf dates, but I didn't
see anything for the ladies. How about we gals get together once
a year too? If any of you would be interested, please e-mail me
at petalstwo@aol.com with your suggestions."
Queen
Anne country folks
Carole
(Surridge) Remillard '68 has come up with the idea of a horseback
(horses optional) event. Here's part of her e-mail.
"I'm
pretty sure there are grads out there that are country people
at heart. I was one of those 'that was country when country wasn't
cool'. What a better way to get together than on horseback. (And
even those that don't own a horse, but love the country, might
want to come and share in the fun.) Organizing a ride and potluck
could be a hoot."
Those
stirred by the prospect of an equine event can e-mail Carole at
hcrest@myfamily.com. Regular mail will get to her at 13615 Heatherwood
Drive, Mill Creek, WA 98012.
