In July, 2002, we were contacted by Evie Martin, who was researching the life of Hollis Martin, the Queen Anne graduate after whom her husband is named. We shared information with Mrs. Martin, who has compiled a substantial album of photos, clippings, letters, and other materials, much of which we present on this Web site as the first of what we hope will be a continuing series featuring Queen Anne graduates and events. Because of the wealth of material provided by Mrs. Martin, we are dividing the story of Hollis into at least five parts, which we will publish at intervals of a week or less. Hollis' life was brief, but he found himself involved in momentous events, dying in one of the most crucial naval battles of all time, the Battle of Midway, on June 4, 1942. A month later, on August 5, 1942, a boy was born to the wife of Hollis' older brother, Dwight, who named the child after his missing brother.

Evie Martin displays her Hollis Martin album and the August 31, 1942, issue of LIFE Magazine, which pictures on the cover George Gay, the lone surviver of the 30 members of Torpedo 8.
For background we give you the opportunity to read a fairly long excerpt from Herman Wouk's novel, War and Remembrance, part of which told of Torpedo 8's role in the Battle of Midway. The passages specifically about Torpedo 8 are in blue type on pages 3 and 4. Click here to begin.
